Weight Loss Tea – it’s all the rage these days from Posh Spice, Victoria Beckham’s Pu Err Tea to ancient Green Tea combinations. So what’s the truth? Can something as simple as tea result in weight loss?

Luckily, as well as being a Top Fitness Instructor and Personal Trainer I’m also a qualified Acupuncturist and Traditional Chinese Medical practitioner. As such I am required to have a comprehensive knowledge of teas and Chinese herbs in order to treat my patients, so I can answer the question with authority and experience.

In every weight loss supplement available – you’ll find a green tea extract. SO perhaps we should start there.

Green tea is full of incredible benefits and yes – one of which is weight loss. But it does far more than that;

It’s full of anti-oxidants. - Like the famous Vitamin E and beta-carotene, Green tea is chocked brim full of the stuff which is commonly used to fight cancer and heart disease. In fact studies have shown that Green Tea may be 200% more powerful than Vitamin E.

Glucose Regulation – Glucose or blood sugar spikes are responsible for that mid day slump many people experience. Correctable with a proper diet, green tea boost the regulation of blood sugar over time. This means you feel fuller for longer and, maintain energy levels.

It does so by slowing the release and action of a digestive enzyme called amylase. Amylase is a vital component of the digestion process particularly of starchy carbs. This means that after meal the blood sugar spike that usually occurs afterwards is delayed and instead slowly and evenly released. You stay satisfied for longer and it reduces the cravings for food. Fantastic, but it does more than that.

Green tea speeds up the metabolism of the body and promotes an increase in thermogenesis – the method your body uses to produce heat. This means that the calories you do consume are burnt off more efficiently. For you science buffs out there the weight loss tea’s effects are derived from Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), the active aspect of Green Tea.

It won't produce the dramatic exaggerated effects that canny marketers use to separate you from your hard earned cash but it will most certainly have a positive effect and aid with your weight loss as part of a balanced diet and exercise regime.

So which weight loss tea is right for you? I prefer the Japanese style Green Tea Sencha or Macha Blends. These are available in many good retailers but I highly recommend my friends in Suki Tea. If you’d prefer something more exotic, Posh Spice’s favourite blend is a darker tea with similar properties called Pu Err. I personally alternate between the two.

Although bitter at first you develop the taste for green tea very quickly, as I found out during my studies of Japanese Martial arts. Soon it becomes a pleasure savoured in quite reflection and a luxury you can look forward to in your journey, the perfect weight loss tea.
